Well I finally did it… It is official… I am officially addicted to golf. Sounds like a good thing right? I agree, it is a good thing. Besides the enjoyment of the game there are some additional benefits such as the exercise when you carry your own golf bag instead of using a cart or a caddy, and you can meet new people. For those into networking it can be a great tool. I have already met a number of people just because I played a round of golf with them.
The downside of this “addiction” is what to do when you are rained, or snowed, out? Currently I am trying to play at least once a week; this could be a full game or even something as simple as just practicing by going to the driving range. One option is to go to one of those places that have an indoor golf simulator. I have not looked into them just yet, but I hear that they can be a bit on the expensive side.
On days that the weather does not permit, you may think of practicing your putting at home. What I see on TV and in moves all the time is some dressed up executive trying to putt into a small drinking cup in his office. While I liked the general idea or being able to practice at home, it seemed kind of weird to me. So what did I do? I went out and bought an Electronic Practice Cup by Brookstone. It just came in yesterday and I was like a kid on Christmas morning.
So what is so special about it compared to a plain plastic cup? There are a few things, the most important to me is that it returns the balls to you (assuming your put is at least close). Imagine a small box about a foot wide with no top, now put the box on its side…as long as your putt goes in the box the ball will be returned to you. That save you from having to go back and forth and from having a room full of golf balls on the floor. In addition it also keeps score for you, counting number of putts (within that 10”-12” area) and number of holes that would have been sunk. It cam be plugged into the wall or run on batteries. I am guessing that for me the number of putts will be much greater than the number of successful putts…but that is why I practice ;o)
