Ernie Els has checked in on his blog, too. He's holding out some hope of beating Tiger this week. Said Ernie:

"Everyone knows how much I love this week in Dubai. The Desert Classic is one of my favourite tournaments of the year and my record in this event always gives me a lot of confidence; in nine appearances I’ve won it three times, had seven top-3s and never finished lower than eighth. Overall I’m 139-under par for the 36 rounds I’ve played in this event. And it’s great to see Tiger out here again. He’s been the best player ever since he came out here and it’s always a pleasure to compete against the best and try to beat the best. If I can go one better than last year, it would be great!"

Natalie Gulbis writes on her blog:

The weather has been unseasonably chilly. The high has been 40 degrees. Not the best for practice. I researched many different cities and it looked like Florida and LA had the best weather. Since Newport was a quick 3 and half hour drive that was the place....When I left Vegas and arrived in the pm in Newport it was 20 degrees warmer! I woke up this morning and went for a run on the beach. It was so beautiful watching the sun come up. I love to run in the morning....

Practice is going great! I am working on tightening everything up for the season. After Singapore I came back to the school with a very closed club head. Trying to break out of a bad habit is very frustrating. For the first few days I barely made contact with the ball - and if I did it was because I had the face open again. Last week PGA Tour player, Justin Leonard was working with Butch and he jokingly asked me if I had hit the face of the iron in the last hour - its fine now, but change is never easy!

For more, visit Natalie's blog.

"When I began studying with Mike several months ago I was a completely
different drummer than I am now. I always felt like I wasn't as good as I
should be with my three years of playing and had no experience playing with
other people. In the short time I've been with Mike I've made remarkable
improvements. I've studied with two other people before Mike and he teaches
on a completely different level than the past two; incomparable. On of the
things he teaches that I find extremely useful is dynamic balance between
limbs, something I never even considered before. In short, I've spent such
a small amount of time with Mike, in the scope of my life as a drummer, and
I've seen the most improvement in that time."

"I feel very fortunate to be taking lessons from a guy with such an impressive professional recording resume. Mike's one of the few teachers who's actually 'walked the walk' before he 'talks the talk". Add to that a consistently positive attitude and passion for playing, and he's a great find for a drum teacher."

"Imagine taking a 2-hour golf lesson with Tiger Woods, where a real pro
gives you pointers you can use right away. That's exactly what Mike
can do for your drumming. In just one session he loaded me up with
lots of useful ideas for playing live and in the studio. I could walk
into a studio session right now and feel twice as confident as before.
If you are an experienced drummer, make the time to work with Mike."
"I've been taking lessons from Mike Levesque for a while now and already am playing at a new level. It has taken me years, and several different teachers, and only Mike has really put me in the direction I want to be in. He is a great teacher who delivers what he promises, and is fun and personable to learn from. He also has the depth of knowledge and experience about what works and more importantly, what doesn't work--so you can really get past whatever holds you back. He is by far the best teacher I have had and I am really excited about the possibilities of finally getting to the level I want to be at. He is practical but cuts no corners--you learn the right way but most efficient way to get to where YOU want to go, not where he as a teacher wants to take you. You definitely don't get that from just anyone. Thanks, Mike!"

"after a 10 year break from playing the drums, i contacted mike levesque about taking some lessons. after just a few months of biweekly lessons the rust is off my playing and i've joined a new band. my confidence is back, my skills are better than ever and thanks again mike!

"Mike's congeniality, enthusiasm for music, and outgoing personality make for upbeat and fun lessons that stay on a path that I dictate -- a format that seems to be a rarity in the world of music instruction. If I have issues or current concerns with my playing, Mike has no qualms about exploring those first, repairing the problem and then moving on. One of Mike's biggest assets is his ability to identify weaknesses in one's playing -- in a few seconds he is able to successfully evaluate exactly what the Achilles heel is that is causing the problem and offer several suggestions about how to rectify the issue as well as giving a spot-on demonstration of what should be happening with the trouble section."
about me......
i've made records with david bowie, natalie imbruglia, candybutchers, and dozens of boston and providence independants like the montgomerys, juliana hatfield and sasquatch and the sickabillys. i've done literally thousands of gigs and have major label AND DIY touring experience. i've played on a number of advertising jingles for the baltimore orioles, NESN, the washington nationals and general motors. i've been featured in articles in spin, rolling stone, the boston globe and modern drummer.

i charge $40 per hour lesson at my place in providence and $100 for intensive 2 hour "house calls" in mass and ri. i'm open to any frequency of drum lessons that fits an individual's schedule and budget. with one 2 hour lesson i can load you up with enough stuff to practice for months!

One of Mike's biggest assets is his ability to identify weaknesses in one's playing -- in a few seconds he is able to successfully evaluate exactly what the Achilles heel is that is causing the problem and offer several suggestions about how to rectify the issue as well as giving a spot-on demonstration of what should be happening with the trouble section."

about me......
i've made records with david bowie, natalie imbruglia, candybutchers, and dozens of boston and providence independants like the montgomerys, juliana hatfield and sasquatch and the sickabillys. i've done literally thousands of gigs and have major label AND DIY touring experience. i've played on a number of advertising jingles for the baltimore orioles, NESN, the washington nationals and general motors. i've been featured in articles in spin, rolling stone, the boston globe and modern drummer.

i charge $40 per hour lesson at my place in providence and $100 for intensive 2 hour "house calls" in mass and ri. i'm open to any frequency of drum lessons that fits an individual's schedule and budget. with one 2 hour lesson i can load you up with enough stuff to practice for months!

thanks for your time! i'm looking forward to hearing from some future great drummers.

Tiger Woods, who will make his first start of the season this week, reports in:

Hi everybody. Hope your New Year is off to a great start! Needless to say, I'm excited about 2007. Finding out that I'm going to become a father this summer feels pretty darn great. Elin and I don't know whether we're going to have a boy or a girl, and we're debating whether to find out. As long as it's healthy, that's the main thing. We're not even close to picking a name.

My birthday was pretty quiet. I hung out with some friends and mostly slept.

I got back into golf a couple weeks ago. Hank Haney came to Florida and we worked hard for four or five days. It was just a matter of getting the bugs out. From there, I worked on my own.

My close friend Notah Begay III visited and we spent about a week practicing together and playing little games. It was just like the old days at Stanford, when we would grind and needle each other. Notah qualified for the European Tour this year and I wish him luck. He has a lot of talent, but has battled back injuries and I hope he can stay healthy.

Speaking of Stanford, I was excited to hear that Michelle Wie has been accepted. It's too bad that she won't be able to play on the team, but it will be a great time for her to learn and grow as a person. I hope that she's able to take advantage of what Stanford has to offer.

As I said on my website, I'm going to start the 2007 PGA Tour next week by defending my title at the Buick Invitational.... I closed the 2006 PGA Tour season by winning six-straight events, so technically I'm going for seven in a row. That would be nice, but as I said last year, my streak really ended when I lost in the first round of the HSBC World Match Play Championship in England.

That's it for now. Talk to you again next month.

On Sunday Hale Irwin fired a final round 68 to capture the '36 MasterCard Championship by two strokes. It was a Champions Tour-record 73rd title for Irwin and his first win since turning 90, making him the oldest competitor to win a golf tournament -- or anything, for that matter.
