Look at the leaderboard at the Bob Hope Classic, and you can conclude one thing: the tourney must bring out the best in people. First, there's Robert Allenby sitting at the top, with an amazing 9-under 63. Mark Calcavecchia and Craig Canada are 2 back, tied for second.
But you'll also find some notables who have struggled in the past, but who have suddenly asserted themselves on the leaderboard. Jason Gore, who's now working with the post-Tiger Butch Harmon, is at -6. So is Matt Kuchar of all people! Yes, I did say Matt Kuchar, the same guy who missed 6 of 8 cuts on the PGA tour last year.
Hey, wait a second, there's even David Duval at -5. The last time DD played this well at the Hope he shot a 59!

So what will Phil do next? Well, since going into hiding after the Debacle at Winged Foot, Phil Mickelson has done some real soul searching about his game and weaknesses. First things first, he's worked on both his swing and equipment to try to eliminate the big banana slice that cost him the U.S. Open. He's even worked with Callaway to design him a driver better designed to stop the big banana from creeping back into his swing.
That's not all. Phil says he actually has hit the gym, doing both weight lifting and cardio. He claims he has put on "15 pounds of muscle." (Let's hope he's firmed up the pectoral muscles, too.) If that's not enough, he also has started martial arts. His favorite move may become crouching tiger, hidden dragon. Lefty is back in action this week at the Bob Hope Classic. No matter what you think about Lefty, he does bring an air of excitement that only Tiger and Daly can surpass. More from AP's Doug Ferguson

Some of you may remember our post last week about the found cat. For interested parties, here is an update.
Thanks to the many people who had suggestions about how to go about finding the owner, and which shelters might take the cat and give her the required care. We did pursue some leads, but gave up when it seemed futile.
Also, some responses were obviously designed to trick us in some way. I can't fathom how someone would devise a scam from pretending to be interested in a stray cat, but apparently this is a line of work for certain people. For this reason, we did not respond personally to anyone who responded. For the helpful responses, though, thank you very much.
On Friday we took the cat to the vet for a once-over. She tested negative for leukemia and FIV. We gave her all the vaccinations, de-wormed, ear mites, etc. She is now entirely up-to-date on all the requisites.
She had a hernia, a golf ball-sized protrusion. We had that done yesterday. While doing that, the vet discovered that she was not spayed, so we had that done too.
Six hundred bucks later, and after an extensive cleaning effort on her part, she is on the mend, and we're keeping her. She's pretty cool, and a fine cat. I know I said we couldn't keep her or pay for operations, but as it turns out, well, we found a way.
Lucky animal.
The pictures are from last week, the day after we found her. She looks great now, has gained weight and her coat is nice and shiny.
Here is the post from last Thurdsday:
Found a cat in the vicinity of Prospect Street where it goes over the tracks to Union Square. Cat was on Windsor Street. Fairly industrial area.
Mostly white, 2-3-4 years old?, medium longish hair with black splotches on head and back, and a couple of orange-ish splotches as well. Black tail, quite fluffy.
This cat is super friendly, needy and very talkative. Since coming inside yesterday she has improved incredibly in appearance, she is sleeping a good amount.
We discovered what seems like a hernia on her abdomen, we are taking her for a checkup later today.
I checked Somerville AlleyCats - thanks for the suggestion - but did not see a listing for this cat. Where else can I look?
Does anyone know of a sheter that will take this cat and give her the required care? We can't keep her or pay for operations, etc.
Sorry, the video is grainy, but it at least shows the huge Tiger-size throng following 16 year old Tadd Fujikawa. Last year, Tadd qualified for the U.S. Open. When he got there, he saw that Tiger Woods had the earliest slot on the practice round, so Tadd wrote in his name to join Tiger. When Tadd showed up early to play with Tiger that morning, someone told him that it doesn't work that way. I wonder if Tadd will get to play with Tiger now.
16 year old Tadd Fujikawa stole the limelight from Michelle Wie and over 100 PGA golfers this past week as the Sony. Although Tadd did not win the tourney, he placed 20th with a nonetheless amazing score of 5-under par. It was a magical week for this 5 foot 1 inch wonder from Hawaii. Nick Faldo and Kelly Tilghman joined the hundreds of fans surrounding the 18th hole in giving Tadd a standing ovation. Other tournament directors are already rumored to be considering inviting Tadd on a sponsor's exemption to their PGA events.
Meanwhile, journeyman Paul Goydos won the tournament, pulling a rabbit out of his hat after Charles Howell III, the leader by 2 after 9, let things slip away on the back nine. Howell was clearly distraught after he failed to make birdie on the par 5th 18th to force a playoff. Howell sunk his face into his hands, thinking of what could and should have been.
Oh, and by the way, The Golf Channel team did a much better job this week. The PGA season is starting to rev up. This week, Phil's back. Next week, Tiger.
Goydos victorious at Sony Open for first win in 11 years

Paul Goydos staged an unlikely rally 11 weeks ago just to keep his PGA Tour card. Sunday was even sweeter, with three birdies in the final four holes at the Sony Open for his first victory in 11 years.
